Much to my dismay, my kids love In-n-Out. Whenever we pass one one the freeway, they practically beg me to stop. They have a whole argument about how it is “the healthier fast food” because there are no freezers or microwaves, everything is fresh, yada yada yada. To me, it’s certainly not healthy and it’s still fast food, but I do let them indulge every so often. I thought it would be fun to try and re-create In-N-Out style burgers at home. One nice thing about In-N-Out hamburger patties are that they are surprisingly small, only about 2 ounces. So, I got some slider buns and made smaller patties. I decided to use turkey meat, but you could easily substitute beef. It’s the secret Thousand Island-esque sauce that really makes it authentic. Enjoy!
- 1 pound ground turkey or beef
- ½ yellow onion, grated
- ½ cup grated cheddar cheese
- 2 tablespoons dijon mustard
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 9 mini slider buns
- red onion, avocado, and romaine for garnish
- Sauce
- ½ cup mayonaise
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 2 tablespoons white vinegar
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons pickle relish
- Grate onion with a box grater and put into a medium bowl.
- Add turkey, bread crumbs, cheddar, dijon, salt and pepper and mix well.
- Using damp hands, take about ¼ cup of turkey mixture and make small, equal size patties and place on clean plate. You should have about 9 mini burgers.
- Mix all the sauce ingredients together and set aside.
- Heat 2 tablespoons oil in a large skillet or grill pan over medium heat. Once sizzling, add the turkey patties and cook until done, about 3-4 minutes on each side (2-3 if using beef)
- Cut the buns in half and lightly toast. Place one turkey patty on each bun and top with 1 tablespoon sauce, lettuce, onion and/or avocado.
- **Alternatively, you can use romaine leaves as buns for a gluten free version.
- Serve with sweet potato fries.
